Home Invader Returned After Police Left
Columbia, South Carolina – A man was shot in killed after eluding police then trying to break back into the same home.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called out to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home located in the 3900 block of Wellesley Dr. last Friday night.
But by the time law enforcement arrived at the scene, 37-year-old Christon Anderson had already fled and they were unable to locate him. Officers took a report and then left the scene.
However, Anderson did not stay away long, returning a few hours later at around 6 a.m. the suspect attempted to break into the home through a window, and was shot in the upper torso by the homeowner.
Deputies responded back to the scene, and Anderson was transported to a local hospital where he died a few hours later.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts confirmed that Anderson was killed by injuries sustained from being shot by the homeowner.
No other injuries were reported from the incident, and no reports on whether the homeowner is facing any charges in connection with the shooting.
I follow a lot of the news stories about home-defense and self-defense shootings all over the nation. I often come across stories related to domestic disturbance where police are called to the scene but are unable to locate the threat because they’ve fled. Then, after police have left the scene, the aggressor returns to continue what they started.
Read here for an article about a man who returned after police left the scene, tried to burn down the home of a woman he’d been in a relationship with, then chased her down and attempted to stab her to death with a piece of broken glass. He was only stopped by a neighbor armed with a gun.
It’s easy to see why owning and knowing how to competently deploy a self-defense weapon is important. Police cannot be in your home at all hours to protect you. If the homeowner had not been armed against a determined intruder forcing their way into the home, this situation might have turned out differently.
